# Learn Dutch in Amsterdam

> Biggest expat city, densest course supply, and the strongest mix of university NT2, private schools, and conversation practice. Also the noisiest market: pick with a bar, not a brochure.

Country: Netherlands, Noord-Holland

## The city for learners
- Feel: High choice, high English trap, serious academic options.
- Best for: Expats who want choice, university-level NT2, and business Dutch options.
- Not for: People who want a quiet small-town pace or the cheapest municipal route only.
- Commute: Haarlem, Amstelveen, and Zaandam are realistic if Amsterdam centre prices sting.
- Exams: For Staatsexamen NT2, university tracks (INTT, VU-NT2) are strong. For inburgering, verify Blik op Werk + municipality rules before you enrol.
- Cost: Private schools and intensives sit high. Offset with a Verified Pro trial rather than stacking three courses.
- INTT (UvA) and VU-NT2 sit at the academic end. Private schools fill speaking and corporate gaps.
- Online tutors still matter: many Amsterdammers book Verified Pros for weekly speaking on top of a course.
- Inburgering schools: prefer Blik op Werk certified if you need a DUO loan.
- Expect English switches in shops and offices. Script a short “Ik oefen Nederlands” line and stick to it.

## Questions
**Is Amsterdam the best city to learn Dutch?**
It is the best city for choice, not automatically for progress. More options also means more weak ones. Use fit scores and the Verified Pro bar.

**Why do people still struggle with Dutch here?**
The English trap is real. Pair a scored course with deliberate speaking practice (tutor or language buddy who agrees not to switch).

**Do I need a school if I only want conversation?**
Not always. A Verified Pro tutor plus daily input can work for speaking goals. For exams or DUO loans, you need a recognised path.
