Amal Gent: Integration Support and NT2 Routing in Ghent

Amal is the city integration centre for Ghent, Belgium. It helps newcomers navigate the Flemish integration system: intake counseling, NT2 course routing, and inburgering trajectory management. If you live in or near Ghent and need to integrate, Amal is your first point of contact.

What Amal Does

Amal conducts the mandatory intake interview for newcomers in the Ghent area. During this intake, a counselor assesses your needs, language level, and personal situation. Based on this assessment, Amal routes you to an appropriate NT2 course provider and sets up your inburgering trajectory.

Amal also offers social orientation sessions, referrals to other services (housing, healthcare, legal aid), and follow-up support throughout your integration process. The service is part of the Flemish integration system and is publicly funded.

How to Use It

If you are a newcomer in Ghent, contact Amal directly to schedule your intake. You do not need a referral. The intake is free and is the standard entry point for the Flemish inburgering trajectory. After intake, Amal helps you enroll in a suitable NT2 course at one of the partner schools in or near Ghent.

How It Fits Your Dutch Learning

Amal does not teach Dutch. It tells you where to learn Dutch and manages the administrative side of your integration. For learners who feel lost in the Flemish system, Amal provides a clear path forward. The routing is personalized: you are not sent to a random school but matched with a provider that fits your level, location, and schedule.

Because Amal is the official Ghent agency, your NT2 enrollment through Amal counts toward your inburgering requirements. The certificate you earn at the end of your course is recognized by the Flemish government.

Limitations

Amal only serves the Ghent area. If you live in Antwerp, Brussels, or another city, you need that city's own agency (Atlas in Antwerp, Huis van het Nederlands in Brussels, and so on). Amal also does not offer Dutch courses itself. It routes you to partner schools, but the quality of those schools varies.

Amal Gent is a navigation service, not a destination. It tells you where to go and helps you get there.
