How much does an online Dutch tutor cost per hour?

The median regular lesson costs $36 per 60 minutes. Half of all tutors charge between $26 and $51. One in ten charges under $18 and one in ten over $66.

The platform matters more than any single figure. Compare within a platform first:

italki trial lessons last 30 minutes and have a median price of $10 across 199 tutors. A trial is an entry price, not a lesson rate, so it stays out of the figures above. Yes. The gap holds within platforms too: on italki, Pros have a median of $28 against $25 for all its tutors; on Preply, Pros have a median of $54 against $42 for all its tutors. Price alone does not mark a Pro: 28% of the other tutors charge $48 an hour or more.

What does Verified Pro actually measure?

Our bar has two conditions: 3,000+ lessons and a 4.9+ rating. The first does almost all the work. Of the 99 tutors with 3,000+ lessons, 93 also pass the rating test. It removes 6.

That is because ratings crowd at the top: 91.8% of rated profiles show 4.9 or higher, and 79.4% show a perfect 5.0.

So read Verified Pro as “a very experienced marketplace tutor whose rating has stayed at the norm”, not as proof of better teaching. Lesson counts and stars do not measure teaching qualifications, exam preparation (Staatsexamen NT2 or inburgering), or skill with absolute beginners. A qualified teacher who joined a platform recently can be the right choice with few lessons on record.

Most profiles sit under 3,000 lessons, where the Pro bar starts (yellow bars). Profiles on platforms that publish no lesson count all land in the first bar.

Which platforms have Verified Pros?

Verified Pros sit almost entirely on two platforms: 57 on Preply and 35 on italki, or 98.9% of all Pros, while those two platforms hold 84.7% of the profiles we index. Part of that is about evidence, not quality. Superprof publishes no lesson counts, so none of its tutors can show 3,000 lessons. A platform with no Pros here has no comparable track record on show, not zero good tutors.

How we collected and compared the data

• Coverage. Public profile fields from the Dutch tutor listings of seven platforms, latest scrape 4 October 2026. The 1003profiles are the ones we index, not the size of the market; each platform's own total differs and changes daily.
• Prices.US dollars as each platform lists them, before fees and taxes at checkout. Every regular price is scaled to 60 minutes (see the table above). italki's figure is the tutor's lowest 60-minute lesson price, which can be a package rate. Profiles without a price are left out of price figures.
• Verified Pro. 3,000+ lessons and a 4.9+ rating on the platform profile; Verbalplanet tutors also need 98%+ positive feedback, because its stars round to half steps. This is our bar, not a platform label.
• Commercial links. We earn a commission on italki and Preply referrals. That never changes these figures or the Pro bar.
