Staatsexamen NT2: Program I vs Program II
Program I is B1 (jobs, mbo). Program II is B2 (hbo, university, many professional roles). This is the exam map, not a course you buy from us.
Staatsexamen NT2 is the official Dutch state exam for adults learning Dutch as a second language. DUO administers it. CvTE oversees it. It is not the same as inburgering. NT2 proves language level for study and work. Inburgering is a civic integration path set by your municipality.
You sit four skills separately: reading, listening, writing, speaking. Each component is paid and scheduled on its own. Many people pass the skills they already use at work first, then spend months on writing or speaking.
Program I or Program II
Program I (Programma I) is roughly CEFR B1. It fits many vocational jobs and mbo-level study. Program II (Programma II) is roughly B2. HBO, university, and a lot of client-facing professional roles ask for II. If a vacancy or admissions page says “NT2” without a number, read it as Program II until you confirm otherwise.
Do not pick II because it “sounds more serious” if you still need B1. The writing and speaking tasks jump hard. A failed II sitting costs time and the exam fee. Confirm the requirement with the school, employer, or IND letter that asked for the diploma.
The four skills
- Luisteren: recordings play once. Daily Dutch audio beats cramming transcripts.
- Lezen: ads, articles, instructions. Train finding the point under time pressure.
- Schrijven: emails, complaints, short arguments. Structure and accuracy both count.
- Spreken: computer prompts, microphone, timer. Unnatural format. Practise that format, not only cafe chat.
How to prepare (without buying a ranking)
A school is useful when you need a calendar, a teacher who marks writing, and classmates. A tutor is useful when you need speaking hours on your schedule. Self-study (for example Boom NT2) is useful when you already have B1 habits and need exam-shaped drills. Most people who pass combine two of those three.
Blik op Werk matters if you need a DUO loan for an inburgering course. NT2 as a standalone diploma is a different product. Do not assume the loan rules for civic integration apply to a private NT2 track. Check DUO and zoekinburgerschool.nl for your case.
