Blik op Werk: The Dutch Quality Mark for Integration Schools
Blik op Werk is the independent quality certification body for inburgering schools in the Netherlands. If a school receives government funding for integration courses, it must hold this certification. Knowing what Blik op Werk does helps you choose a reliable provider.
What Blik op Werk Does
The foundation at https://www.blikopwerk.nl inspects and certifies schools that offer inburgering, NT2, literacy, and related courses. Certification covers teaching quality, administrative procedures, student guidance, and measurable learning outcomes. Schools are re-inspected regularly, and the quality mark can be revoked if standards slip.
Blik op Werk also maintains a public register of certified schools and handles complaints from students. The register is searchable and forms the backbone of the Zoekinburgerschool.nl directory. For municipalities and DUO, Blik op Werk certification is a prerequisite for contracting a school for government-funded integration programs.
Why It Matters for Learners
Choosing a Blik op Werk-certified school gives you a baseline guarantee: the teachers are qualified, the administration is honest, and the school has a track record of getting students to pass their exams. If problems arise, you have a formal complaints channel.
Schools without the quality mark are not necessarily bad — many excellent private tutors and small language schools operate outside the system — but you have fewer protections.
Limitations
Blik op Werk certification is specific to the Dutch inburgering system. It does not cover schools in Belgium, private conversation tutors, or university language centers (which have their own accreditation systems). The certification focuses on minimum standards rather than excellence, so two certified schools can still differ significantly in teaching approach and atmosphere.
