  • Free tier available. Pro unlocks advanced features.

What Clozemaster Dutch actually is

Clozemaster is not a language course. It does not teach you Dutch grammar, pronunciation, or conversation. What it does is show you tens of thousands of real Dutch sentences with one word missing, and you fill in the blank.

This technique, called cloze deletion, forces your brain to process the whole sentence to figure out which word fits. Over time, you absorb vocabulary in context rather than memorising isolated word lists. The sentences are drawn from real Dutch text, so you encounter natural word order, common collocations, and idiomatic phrasing.

Who Clozemaster is actually for

Clozemaster is for learners who have completed the beginner phase and hit the "intermediate plateau." You know the basic grammar. You can have a simple conversation. But your vocabulary is too small to read a newspaper, watch the news, or express yourself beyond daily small talk.

At this stage, an efficient way forward is massive vocabulary input in context. Clozemaster provides exactly that: 50,000+ sentences, ordered by the frequency of the missing word, so you always learn the most commonly used words first.

How it works

Clozemaster presents a Dutch sentence with one word blanked out. You either type the word or select it from multiple choices. After you answer, you see the full sentence with a translation. The app tracks which words you know and which you struggle with, then uses spaced repetition to re-test you at optimal intervals.

Two modes:

  • Multiple choice: faster, good for initial exposure
  • Text input: harder, better for active recall and spelling

The sentences cover vocabulary from A2 (common daily words) through C1 (abstract, professional, and literary vocabulary). You can filter by CEFR level or by word frequency.

What Clozemaster does well

Volume. 50,000+ sentences is a massive corpus. No flashcard deck comes close without enormous manual effort.

Context. Every word appears in a real sentence. You learn not just "aanvragen" means "to request," but that it commonly appears with "vergunning" (permit) in bureaucratic Dutch.

Frequency ordering. The app starts with the most common Dutch words and works upward. Time spent on Clozemaster directly correlates to vocabulary coverage of real Dutch text.

Spaced repetition built in. No need to manage an Anki deck. The app schedules reviews automatically.

What Clozemaster does not do

Grammar teaching. Zero. The app assumes you already know Dutch sentence structure, verb conjugation, and word order rules. If you do not understand why "Ik wil dat je komt" puts "komt" at the end, Clozemaster will not explain it.

Speaking or listening practice. This is a reading-and-typing tool. For pronunciation, you need something else.

Beginner onboarding. The easiest sentences still assume you know basic Dutch words and can read simple sentences. Absolute beginners should start with Duolingo, Memrise, or a structured course first.

How to use Clozemaster effectively

As a 10-15 minute daily supplement to a main study routine, Clozemaster is excellent. Use it alongside:

Do not use Clozemaster as your only Dutch study tool. It strengthens vocabulary and sentence pattern recognition. It does not teach you to produce Dutch in real time.
