About Michiel V.

Hello there, I'm Michiel, born and raised among books and canals in Amsterdam. With parents who were constantly immersed in the Dutch language through their work as a journalist, writer, and Dutch teacher, I was practically raised on the language, grammar, and culture. However, I chose a different path; during my studies in Political Science, I discovered that entrepreneurship appealed to me more at the time, and I built a career in the hospitality and IT sectors. Along the way, I found that training employees and advising bar managers and owners sparked an interest in sharing more of my knowledge. Although I'm not an accredited teacher, I see this platform as an opportunity to explore whether a career switch might be right for me. I believe it will be fulfilling to help people better understand the Dutch language and culture, which are still very dear to my heart. Whether someone wants to improve their Dutch for work, travel, or personal growth, I'm here to guide them in learning this fun, yet sometimes complicated language. In addition to my interest in the Dutch language and literature, I have a strong passion for modern history, politics, and international relations, as well as the ups and downs of the hospitality sector. While I don't hold official teaching certificates, I bring over 15 years of experience in training and mentoring bar staff, managers, and entrepreneurs. In these roles, my teaching approach has evolved to meet various learning needs, ranging from direct instruction to teach young bartenders the basics of spirits, drinks, and mixology principles, to applying problem-based learning to help managers improve their margins, efficiency, and sustainability in their operations. Like many others, I had to switch to blended learning techniques, or in plain Dutch, e-learning, during COVID, using familiar video conferencing software to help entrepreneurs in the hard-hit hospitality industry navigate their businesses through this tough period. My experience extends beyond hospitality; I've also contributed to research and experimental design for topics like traffic safety, yeast growth and health, and neuromarketing for a startup in the field of computer vision and eye-tracking. Besides my professional background, which naturally evolved into knowledge transfer, I was immersed, sometimes more than I wanted, in the Dutch language, grammar, and literature, as one of my parents holds a PhD in Dutch. This deeper-than-average exposure to the language, combined with my professional experience, allows me, in my view, to offer engaging lessons focused on the practical application of Dutch. From chatting at the bar to working on your business. Learn Dutch from a chatterbox. My lessons are practical, engaging, and tailored to help you speak Dutch everywhere. Who knows, you might finally be able to order your favorite drink afterwards!
