- Een Beetje Nederlands is a podcast made specifically for intermediate Dutch learners (B1-B2).
- Host Robin van der Markt speaks in slow, clear Dutch with free transcripts for every episode.
- Topics cover Dutch history, culture, and daily life. Episodes are 12-30 minutes.
- Useful free listening resource for the A2-to-B2 bridge.
What Een Beetje Nederlands actually is
Een Beetje Nederlands ("A Little Bit of Dutch") is a podcast created by Robin van der Markt in January 2021. Robin is a Dutch native who learned another language himself and noticed that intermediate learners had almost no good listening resources: beginner podcasts were too simple, native podcasts were too fast.
His solution: a podcast in clear, measured Dutch about genuinely interesting topics. Not "where is the train station" but the Eighty Years' War, the life of Van Gogh, and how the Dutch housing market works.
The podcast is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and the website.

Why this podcast matters
Most Dutch learners hit a wall between understanding textbook Dutch and understanding real Dutch people. The jump from A2 listening exercises to NPO Radio 1 is enormous. Een Beetje Nederlands bridges this gap.
Robin speaks at roughly 75-80% of native speed. The articulation is clean. The vocabulary is intermediate but not simplified to the point of being unnatural. You can follow the narrative without understanding every word, and the transcripts let you fill in the gaps afterwards.
How to use it
One effective routine:
- Listen to the episode once without the transcript. Try to follow the main ideas.
- Listen again while reading the transcript. Mark words you do not know.
- Listen a third time without the transcript. Notice how much more you catch.
A 15-20 minute episode done this way takes about 45 minutes total. Two episodes per week adds up to real listening progress within a month.
Topics
The podcast covers:
- Dutch history: The Eighty Years' War, the Dutch Golden Age, World War II in the Netherlands
- Culture: Sinterklaas, Koningsdag, Dutch food, Dutch directness
- Famous figures: Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Annie M.G. Schmidt, Johan Cruijff
- Daily life: The Dutch housing market, education system, healthcare, the polder model
The history episodes are particularly good because they introduce vocabulary you would never encounter in a textbook but that appears constantly in Dutch museums, guided tours, and conversations about Dutch identity.
What Een Beetje Nederlands is not
It is not a complete course. There are no grammar explanations, no exercises, no speaking practice. It is purely a listening resource.
It is also not for beginners. If you are below A2, the episodes will be too difficult even with transcripts. Start with simpler resources (like Dutchies to Be or beginner YouTube channels) and return to Een Beetje Nederlands when you have a foundation.
Who should listen
- A2-B1 learners who can understand slow, clear Dutch but get lost in native-speed media
- Anyone preparing for the NT2 listening exam
- Self-study learners who need more input hours
- Learners who want cultural knowledge alongside language practice
