Start with the route that matches your goal, not the one with the best website. In Antwerp, most new arrivals at A0-A1 end up choosing between three realistic options: Linguapolis at the University of Antwerp, CVO Antwerpen for subsidised evening or daytime classes, and Atlas Antwerpen (Agentschap) if you need an inburgering trajectory. Private tutoring is a fourth route for people who want one-to-one attention or a flexible schedule.

The three main routes

Linguapolis is the university option. It is a recognised NT2 provider with intensive daytime and evening courses, and it also does language testing. The academic pace suits people who plan to study or work in a Dutch-speaking environment and want to reach B1 or B2. It is less suited to someone who wants a slow, low-pressure introduction to the language, or who needs the course to double as an integration trajectory.

CVO Antwerpen is government-subsidised adult education. Rates are typically lower than private schools, and the A1 to C1 pathways are well established. This is often the best fit for expats who work during the day and want an evening course, or who want to spread the cost over a longer period. It is not the right choice if you need a fast, intensive track or one-to-one attention. Check the provider for current fees and enrolment dates.

Atlas Antwerpen (Agentschap) is the city's own integration agency. It routes newcomers to NT2 courses and provides inburgering trajectories independent of the Flemish Agency. If you have an integration obligation, start here. It is less useful if you are already settled and just want to improve your Dutch for work or social life, because the intake is built around integration.

A related option is Atlas Integratie & Inburgering Antwerpen, which offers integration and inburgering support with Dutch course enrolment assistance across A1 to C1. It overlaps with the agency above, so check which desk handles your case before enrolling twice.

University and hogeschool options

Thomas More University of Applied Sciences is the largest hogeschool in Flanders and is associated with KU Leuven. It provides Dutch language support for international students across several Antwerp province campuses. This is a good fit if you are already enrolled as a student there, or planning to be. It is not a general-purpose evening course for working expats, so do not treat it as one.

Self-study and private tutors

If your schedule does not fit a fixed class, Learn Dutch with Alain is a Flemish-Dutch teacher on YouTube. The channel covers Belgian Dutch vocabulary, expressions and pronunciation differences, which matters in Flanders. It is a supplement, not a replacement for a course with feedback. It suits self-directed learners and people who want to sound less like a textbook and more like a neighbour.

For one-to-one work, our tutor list includes verified teachers. Examples include Rehana, Jason Reef and Carl. Verified Pro on this site means a tutor with 3,000+ lessons and a 4.9+ rating on their platform. Private tutoring suits people who need flexibility, a specific accent, or intensive speaking practice. It is usually the most expensive per hour, so check rates with each tutor.

Which level do you actually need?

For inburgering under the 2021 Civic Integration Act, the standard route is B1, with exams in reading, listening, writing and speaking plus KNM. A municipality can allow A2 after substantial effort. Older obligations used A2. For naturalisation, the language requirement is A2 in 2026, with a move to B1 planned but no confirmed start date.

Staatsexamen NT2 has two programmes. Programma I is B1 and is aimed at work and vocational study. Programma II is B2 and is aimed at higher education and many professional roles. If you are starting at A0, you do not need to decide between these yet. You need a solid A1 course and a plan for A2.

A practical starting sequence

First, decide whether you have an integration obligation. If yes, contact Atlas Antwerpen (Agentschap) before you pay for anything else. Second, look at your weekly schedule. If you can attend daytime classes, Linguapolis gives you a faster academic track. If you work, CVO Antwerpen is usually the more practical fit. Third, if neither works, combine a self-study channel with a private tutor from the tutor list.

Use the path finder if you want a shortlist based on your level and goal, and the directory to browse all providers. For integration specifics, see inburgering. For exam preparation, see nt2-prep. If you are still deciding where to live, cities covers other options in Flanders and the Netherlands.

One last point on price. Subsidised courses are usually cheaper than private ones, but exact fees, materials and registration costs vary. Check with each provider directly rather than relying on second-hand figures.
