B1 is reachable on your own if you accept one thing: you can self-study reading, listening and vocabulary fairly well, but speaking and writing need feedback. A workable plan uses one course spine, one vocabulary tool, one listening habit, and some live conversation. Below is how to structure that with resources from our listings.

Start with a course spine

Pick one structured course and finish it. Jumping between five apps is the most common way self-study stalls.

Intertaal is a specialist educational publisher in Almere that distributes NT2 textbook series such as Contact!. It suits learners who want a paper or digital course with clear progression to B1. It does not suit people who want a gamified app or short daily sessions. If you buy a book, check the provider for current prices and editions.

Assimil uses bilingual dialogues and progressive grammar. It works well for learners who like reading and repeating dialogues, and it covers A1 to B1. It is less useful if you dislike translation-based methods or want heavy speaking practice built in.

Build vocabulary with sentences, not word lists

At B1, isolated words stop helping. You need words in context.

Clozemaster Dutch drills vocabulary from real Dutch sentences and covers A2 to C1, so it fits the B1 stage well. It is a good daily habit of 10 to 15 minutes. It is not a full course and will not teach you to speak.

Mondly Dutch is phrase-focused with speech recognition and conversation simulations. It suits beginners who want to practise short spoken phrases, but it only goes to A2, so treat it as a warm-up rather than a B1 path.

Make listening a daily habit

Listening is where self-study learners often fall behind, because B1 Dutch speech is fast and reduced.

DutchPod101 has a large audio and video library across levels, with a freemium model. It is strong for self-paced listening and suits learners who like lesson-style audio. It does not suit people who want one linear course, since the library is large and you must choose your own path.

The Dutch Online Academy Podcast offers short topical episodes from A1 to B1. It fits learners building listening from A1 upward and is easy to fit into a commute. It is not a grammar course, so pair it with your spine.

Jelmer Dutch Teacher on Instagram posts daily phrases, grammar tips and pronunciation guides in a friendly style. It suits self-study learners who want small, regular inputs. It is not a structured curriculum and should not replace one.

Add feedback for speaking and writing

This is the part self-study cannot fully cover. Verified Pro tutors on this site have 3,000+ lessons and a 4.9+ rating on their platform.

Janelfa R. is a Verified Pro tutor on Preply. She fits learners who want regular conversation practice with a fixed schedule. She does not suit people who cannot commit to recurring lessons.

Marcel is a Verified Pro tutor on italki. He suits learners who want flexible, pay-as-you-go speaking practice. If you prefer a highly structured grammar course, a conversation tutor may not be the best fit alone.

Jannette Fenijn is a Verified Pro tutor on italki. She fits learners who want to work on fluency and correction together. Browse more on /dutch-tutors.

A simple weekly structure

A realistic B1 week looks like this. Four or five short vocabulary sessions on Clozemaster. Three listening sessions, mixing DutchPod101 and the podcast. Two or three study blocks in your course spine. One or two conversations with a tutor, plus writing a short text and getting it corrected.

If you are preparing for a specific exam, use /nt2-prep and /inburgering. For context on official requirements: inburgering under the 2021 Civic Integration Act uses a standard B1 route, though a municipality can allow A2 after substantial effort. Naturalisation requires A2 in 2026, with a move to B1 planned but no confirmed start date. Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I is B1 and Programma II is B2. Always check the official source for your own case.

If you are not sure where to start, the /tools/path-finder can help, and /directory lists more options by city and type.

What to avoid

Do not collect resources instead of using them. Do not skip speaking until you feel ready, because B1 readiness comes from speaking. Do not trust any fixed timeline for reaching B1. And do not assume an app alone will get you to B1, since most stop at A2 or focus on one skill.

How we know this: the options above come from The Dutch Directory listings checked on 2026-10-04, and fit scores are editorial, not user ratings.
