If you work shifts, the main problem is not finding a Dutch course. It is finding one that still fits when your roster changes. In practice, that means one-to-one online lessons you can move around, or schools that run online and evening groups at several times. Fixed daytime group courses are usually the worst fit, even when the teaching is good.
Below are options from our listings that shift workers most often ask about. None of them are marketed specifically at shift workers, so read the fit notes and check the provider before you commit. Prices, schedules and start dates change, so ask the provider directly.
What actually makes a course flexible
Flexibility is not a single feature. It is a combination of three things: when lessons happen, whether you can reschedule, and how much you can do on your own.
One-to-one lessons are the most adaptable because you and the tutor agree the times. Group courses are cheaper per hour but usually fixed. Online delivery helps, but a live online group at 10:00 on Tuesday is no better than a classroom if you are on a late shift.
If you need to study at 3am, no live course will help. In that case you want a course with a strong self-study component plus occasional live check-ins. Ask the provider whether that exists before you pay.
Options that suit irregular schedules
Preply Dutch Tutors is a marketplace of native Dutch tutors, with levels from A1 to C1 and filters for goals such as Business, NT2 and Conversation. It is the most obviously flexible option here because you book individual tutors and agree times with them. It suits shift workers who can plan a few days ahead and who are comfortable managing their own progress. It does not suit people who want a fixed syllabus, a recognised certificate or a class of peers. Fit score 78/100.
CVO Brussel offers officially recognised NT2 courses at A1 to B2, online or on campus, with morning, afternoon and evening options and varying intensities. For a shift worker in or near Brussels, the range of times is the main draw. It suits people who want a recognised route and can commit to a course that still has fixed lesson times. It does not suit anyone who needs to reschedule every week. Fit score 77/100.
Regina Coeli (The Nuns) in Vught and Eindhoven is known for intensive one-to-one Dutch training, online or in person, at A1 to B2. It is the strongest option here for fast progress, and the one-to-one format means you can often arrange times around work. The trade-off is intensity: it suits professionals who can block out time, not people who want one evening a week. Fit score 89/100.
The Square Mile Amsterdam runs business and conversational Dutch for professionals at A1 to B2, online or in person, with fast-track corporate programmes and intensives. It fits shift workers whose employer is paying and who can attend a short intensive block. It does not fit someone who needs a long, low-intensity evening course. Fit score 81/100.
CLL Brussels offers group and private Dutch lessons, intensive programmes and CNaVT exam preparation at A1 to B2, online or in person. Private lessons are the flexible part; group courses are not. It suits learners in Brussels who want exam preparation alongside general Dutch. Fit score 80/100.
Berlitz Brussels and Berlitz Amsterdam both use the Berlitz Method for immersive Dutch at A1 to B2, in person and online, with business and private formats. Private lessons are the realistic option for irregular schedules. The group courses are fixed, so they suit shift workers less well. Fit scores 79/100 and 76/100.
Dutch Academy Eindhoven covers A0 to B1 with interactive group and intensive courses, online or in person, and is well rated by expats for practical progress. It suits learners in the Eindhoven area who can attend a fixed group. It does not suit anyone who needs to move lessons week by week. Fit score 77/100.

Levels, exams and what to check
Before choosing a course, decide what you are working towards. Inburgering under the 2021 Civic Integration Act, obligatory from 1 January 2022, uses a standard route at B1 with exams in reading, listening, writing and speaking plus KNM, though a municipality can allow A2 after substantial effort. Older obligations used A2. For naturalisation the language requirement is A2 in 2026, with a move to B1 planned but no confirmed start date. For the Staatsexamen NT2, Programma I is B1 for work and vocational study, and Programma II is B2 for higher education and many professional roles. Check the official source for your own situation.
If you are unsure where to start, the path finder and the inburgering and NT2 preparation sections are useful. You can also browse Dutch tutors, the full directory and city pages.
One more note: a Verified Pro on this site means a tutor with 3,000 or more lessons and a 4.9 or higher rating on their platform. It is a quality signal, not a guarantee of flexibility. Always confirm scheduling, cancellation rules and whether lessons can be moved before you pay.
How we know this: the options come from The Dutch Directory listings checked on 2026-10-07, and fit scores are editorial, not user ratings.
