If you work a rotating hospital roster, the course that survives is a blended or evening B1 course with asynchronous online work and flexible live sessions. Fixed daytime classes will break the first time you swap a shift. Plan B1 as a step toward the B2 level that BIG registration asks for, and check each provider directly for current schedules, prices and start dates.

Why the format matters more than the level

B1 is B1 on paper. In practice, a course that meets every Tuesday at 10:00 is unusable for someone on early, late and night shifts in the same month. What works is a course where most of the work is online and self-paced, with live contact that can be moved or caught up. Before you enrol, ask two questions: how many live sessions are mandatory, and what happens if you miss one. If the answer is "you fall behind", keep looking.

This is also why exam preparation is a separate decision. The BIG-register Language Test and the BIG-register taaleis Nederlands sit at B2 and above, not B1. You do not need to solve them while you are still building B1.

Options that fit irregular shifts

Katja Verbruggen NT2 is the loosest fit for a roster in the sense that it is not a course at all. It is an NT2 teacher posting exam tips and professional vocabulary for healthcare and office Dutch, online. Useful if you want short, repeatable input you can do at 23:00 after a late shift. It will not give you a structured B1 programme or a certificate, so it suits self-directed learners and not people who need deadlines.

Babel Medical Dutch B2+ in Utrecht is the closest thing here to a medical Dutch course, but it starts at B2+. If you are already near B2 and want BIG-register exam preparation with medical content, it is a strong candidate. If you are genuinely at B1, it is too early, and the medical vocabulary will land on shaky grammar.

Medical Dutch - Maastricht University Academy is online and aimed at healthcare professionals with foreign diplomas, preparing for the BIG-register language requirement at B2 or B2+. Online delivery helps with shifts, but the level is above B1. Treat it as your next step, not your current one.

CNaVT PTGE (Professionele Taalvaardigheid Gezondheidszorg-en Zorg) and CNaVT PMT are Belgian CNaVT certificates for healthcare and care-sector Dutch, at B2. If you work in Flanders, or you are aiming at a Flemish employer or study programme, these are the relevant exams. They are not B1 courses and they are not for people still assembling basic fluency.

Comparing the realistic picks

Option Type Levels Format Best for
Katja Verbruggen NT2 Social / self-study B1, B2 Online Shift workers who want flexible input, not a fixed class
Babel Medical Dutch B2+ School B2, C1 Online and in person Near-B2 healthcare workers preparing for BIG
Medical Dutch - Maastricht University Academy University B2, C1 Online Foreign-diploma professionals heading to BIG
CNaVT PTGE Exam B2 Online and in person Flanders-based care-sector professionals
BIG-register Language Test Exam B2, C1 In person The end goal, not a B1 step

What B1 actually means for you

Under the 2021 Civic Integration Act, with the obligation running from 1 January 2022, the standard route is B1, with exams in reading, listening, writing and speaking plus KNM. A municipality can allow A2 after substantial effort, and older obligations used A2. If you are integrating rather than registering, B1 is the target you are working toward. See our inburgering section for the wider picture.

For naturalisation, the language requirement is A2 in 2026. A move to B1 is planned but has no confirmed start date. That matters if you are weighing how much Dutch you need for a passport against how much you need for the ward.

Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I is B1 and is aimed at work and vocational study. Programma II is B2 and is what higher education and many professional roles expect. If your goal is a hospital job in the Netherlands, B1 is a waypoint and B2 is the destination. Check the official source before you plan around any of this.

Practical rules for a rotating roster

Choose asynchronous first. A course where 70 percent of the work is online and self-paced will survive a run of night shifts. A course with two fixed evening sessions a week will not, unless your rota is stable.

Ask about catch-up. Some providers record live sessions or run repeat groups. Others do not. This single question separates courses that work for shift workers from courses that do not.

Separate B1 from the BIG exam. Do not try to prepare for a B2 exam while you are still at B1. Build the base, then move to NT2 preparation or a medical Dutch course.

Use a tutor if the group pace is wrong. A tutor can move sessions around your rota in a way a group course cannot. Our tutor listings include verified tutors, which on this site means 3,000 or more lessons and a 4.9 or higher rating on their platform.

If you are still deciding what level to aim for, the path finder can help, and the directory lists options by city if you would rather learn in person. For region-specific choices, see cities.

How we know this: the options come from The Dutch Directory listings checked on 2026-10-16, and fit scores are editorial, not user ratings.
