TL;DR
- KU Leuven's Instituut voor Levende Talen (ILT) is the leading academic NT2 provider in Belgium, with the full CEFR ladder (levels 1-6, A1-C1).
- The flagship intensive summer course runs 31 July - 28 August 2026, 80 hours, €460-€480.
- It is the natural choice for highly educated expats in Flanders and for international students preparing for a KU Leuven degree.
Why ILT matters
KU Leuven is consistently ranked among Europe's top universities, and its Institute for Modern Languages (Instituut voor Levende Talen) is the language arm. For Dutch as a second language (Dutch is the medium of instruction across KU Leuven's Flemish-language programmes), ILT runs the full curriculum from absolute beginner through to C1, in formats designed for adults.
It's also the home of the official Dutch Preparatory Language Year, the one-year intensive program that international students take before starting a Dutch-medium KU Leuven degree.
Course formats
ILT offers three main paths:
1. Regular term courses (levels 1-6). Term-by-term, evening and daytime options, on-campus and blended.
2. Intensive courses. Multiple weekly sessions, faster progression. Levels 1-6 mostly available.
3. The summer intensive (the famous one). 80 hours condensed into four weeks, late July to late August. This is the option international students fly in for.
4. The Dutch Preparatory Language Year. A full academic year of intensive Dutch, ending at B2 (the entry level for most KU Leuven Dutch-language degree programmes).
The 2026 summer course in detail
From ILT's summer course page, confirmed for 2026:
- Dates: Friday 31 July - Friday 28 August 2026
- Hours: 80 total, 20 per week
- Levels available: Beginner (level 1) through intermediate/advanced
- Price: €460 (levels 1-3, coursebook not included); €480 (levels 4-5, coursebook included)
- Registration deadline: 30 June 2026
At roughly €6/hour for instruction, this is one of the best-value intensives anywhere in the Dutch-speaking world. You pay for a serious academic curriculum at a top university for less than you'd pay for ten Preply lessons.
What's actually good
It's KU Leuven. The academic standard is high; teachers are NT2-trained; the curriculum is rigorous. International students take it seriously because it's the gatekeeper for degree admission.
Six clearly demarcated levels. Level 1 (A1 entry) to Level 6 (C1). You can pinpoint exactly where you are and where you're going.
Real C1 pathway. Most Belgian and Dutch language schools stop at B2. ILT actually offers C1, which matters for academic and professional progression.
Mixed formats. Online, blended, on-campus, pick what fits your life.
Honest weaknesses
- Leuven is Leuven. It's a beautiful student city, but if you live in Brussels or Antwerp, daily commute to Leuven for an intensive course is a real commitment. The blended/online options help.
- Pace is academic. The summer course in particular assumes you can dedicate full daytime hours, do homework in the evenings, and learn fast. If you have a full-time job that won't let you take four weeks off, regular term courses are the right fit instead.
- Coursebook charge. At levels 1-3, the coursebook is on top of the €460 fee. Budget another €30-€60.
How it compares
- Linguapolis at the University of Antwerp is the closest equivalent, academic NT2 at a top Flemish university, similar pricing band.
- UGent UCT in Ghent is the third academic NT2 in Belgium, similar quality.
- CVO Antwerpen and CVO Brussel are the government-subsidised cheaper alternatives, slower pace, broader public.
- CLL Brussels is the Brussels EU-bubble pick, also runs CNaVT exam prep.
- For self-study, the Boom NT2 series is the standard you'll see referenced everywhere, including in ILT courses at the higher levels.
