A French man who died after contracting the shamondavirus was already seriously ill before the infection, according to the French health service. The man, reported by local newspaper Le Progrès to be a sixty-year-old from near Lyon, was in hospital for a serious condition and had a severely weakened immune system. That compromised immunity is cited as the reason he was able to become infected. His symptoms were worsened by the virus, and he died earlier this month. The French health ministry describes the case as exceptional.

What this means if you are learning Dutch or new in the Netherlands

This is a single, exceptional case and not a sign of a wider outbreak. For anyone learning Dutch, the useful takeaway is the vocabulary: shamondavirus (the virus name), ernstig verzwakt immuunsysteem (severely weakened immune system) and uitzonderlijke situatie (exceptional situation). If you follow Dutch news, such reports are a good way to practise reading health stories with a calm, factual tone. For newcomers, the Dutch public health system (GGD) remains the main source of reliable information, and routine hygiene and staying home when ill are the standard advice. There is no indication of any change to public health measures in the Netherlands.
