Rail travellers in the Netherlands should check their routes before setting out this October, as planned engineering works will affect several busy lines. According to DutchReview, no trains will run to or from Amsterdam Centraal on Saturday 3 October. From 12 October, services between Alphen aan den Rijn and other stations on that route will also be disrupted, with further changes expected around Amersfoort and other parts of the network during the month.
Disruptions like these are usually announced in advance by NS and other operators, and replacement buses are often arranged. Even so, journeys can take noticeably longer, and stations may be busier than usual. It is worth building in extra time and checking the NS app or website shortly before you travel, since details can change.
What this means if you are learning Dutch or new in the Netherlands
If you are still getting used to Dutch public transport, October is a good moment to practise a few useful habits. Learn the words for replacement bus (vervangende bus) and timetable change (wijziging), and get comfortable reading station signs and announcements in Dutch. If you rely on a particular route for work, school or appointments, plan an alternative now rather than on the day. Asking a staff member for help is also a normal and accepted thing to do, and a low-pressure way to use your Dutch in real life.
