Oefenen.nl and NT2TaalMenu: Free Dutch Practice From The Netherlands and Flanders
Oefenen.nl and NT2TaalMenu are two free, long-established Dutch-language practice platforms. Both are designed for non-native speakers and focus on practical language skills for daily life, work, and integration.
What Oefenen.nl Offers
Oefenen.nl is a Dutch platform aimed at adults improving basic skills including language, numeracy, and digital literacy. The Dutch-language section includes interactive exercises covering reading, listening, and vocabulary around everyday topics: shopping, health, travel, work, and dealing with official institutions.
The platform is entirely in Dutch, which makes it accessible to speakers of any first language but assumes some basic comprehension. Registration is free. Exercises are short, self-contained units with immediate feedback.
What NT2TaalMenu Offers
NT2TaalMenu is a complementary free site focused specifically on Dutch as a second language. It organizes materials by CEFR level from A1 through B1 and covers reading, listening, writing, speaking prompts, grammar, and vocabulary. The site also includes specific preparation material for the Inburgering exam.
NT2TaalMenu is text-heavy with downloadable worksheets and online exercises. Navigation is in Dutch. Like Oefenen.nl, it is free and requires no registration for most content.
Good Fit For
Self-study learners who want free, structured practice at beginner and intermediate levels. Both platforms are particularly useful for Inburgering candidates, as NT2TaalMenu includes exam-style exercises. The Dutch-only interface doubles as immersion practice.
Limitations
Neither platform is a complete beginner course: some initial Dutch knowledge is needed to navigate the instructions. The interfaces and exercise formats are functional rather than polished. There are no speaking-feedback tools beyond prompts. Neither platform has a mobile app.
How They Compare
Oefenen.nl and NT2TaalMenu serve a similar audience to NedBox but with more emphasis on exam preparation and formal exercise formats. They complement course-based learning and fill gaps for learners who cannot afford paid resources.
Who They Suit
Both platforms work well for motivated self-study learners, especially Inburgering candidates and those on a limited budget. They are less suited for absolute beginners who need English-language instruction or for learners who prefer mobile-first, gamified formats.
