Stellenbosch University — Afrikaans & Nederlands: Dutch in South Africa
Stellenbosch University, one of South Africa's leading research institutions, offers BA and Honours programs in Afrikaans & Nederlands through its Department of Afrikaans and Dutch. Given the close historical and linguistic relationship between Afrikaans and Dutch, the program provides a unique perspective on Dutch language and literature from an African context.
What Stellenbosch Afrikaans & Nederlands Offers
The BA program combines the study of Afrikaans and Dutch language, literature, and linguistics. Students who already speak Afrikaans (or have learned it) find Dutch accessible due to the high degree of mutual intelligibility between the two languages. The curriculum includes Dutch literature from the Middle Ages to the present, comparative Afrikaans-Dutch linguistics, and the historical development of both languages.
At the Honours level, students engage in advanced research in Dutch and Afrikaans literary studies or linguistics. The program has strong ties to Dutch and Flemish academic institutions, with visiting professors and exchange opportunities. Stellenbosch's research output in Dutch and Afrikaans linguistics is internationally recognized.
The program also explores the complex cultural and political relationship between Afrikaans and Dutch, including the debates around standard Dutch versus the development of Afrikaans as a distinct language.
Good Fit For
South African students interested in the deep connection between Afrikaans and Dutch. Afrikaans speakers who want to formalize and extend their Dutch proficiency. Students of comparative linguistics interested in the Afrikaans-Dutch relationship. Those considering academic careers in Afrikaans and Dutch literary or linguistic studies.
Limitations
The program is primarily for enrolled Stellenbosch students. Courses are in-person in Stellenbosch. The curriculum assumes familiarity with either Afrikaans or Dutch — it is not a beginner Dutch course for total newcomers. The program is academic rather than practical, focusing on literature and linguistics. Not suitable for learners who want conversational Dutch for integration or work in the Netherlands.
