Universität Oldenburg — Niederlandistik: Dutch Studies in Lower Saxony
The Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg is the only university in Lower Saxony to offer a full BA program in Dutch Studies (Niederlandistik). Its location in northwestern Germany, close to the Dutch border, gives it a natural connection to the Dutch-speaking world. An MA in Dutch Linguistics and Literary Studies builds on the BA for advanced study.
What Uni Oldenburg Niederlandistik Offers
The BA program in Niederlandistik accepts students with no prior Dutch knowledge and builds to B2/C1 proficiency. The curriculum combines Dutch language acquisition with courses in Dutch and Flemish literature, sociolinguistics, and cultural studies. Students gain practical language skills alongside academic analytical competencies.
The MA program in Dutch Linguistics and Literary Studies allows for deeper specialization. Students explore topics like Dutch dialectology, Frisian language contact, colonial and postcolonial Dutch literature, and comparative Germanic linguistics. Research projects often connect to Oldenburg's strengths in linguistics and its proximity to the Dutch border region.
The institute maintains partnerships with Dutch and Flemish universities for exchange semesters and research collaboration. Students can spend part of their degree at a partner institution in the Netherlands or Belgium.
Good Fit For
Students in northern Germany who want a local Dutch Studies program without moving to the Randstad. Learners interested in the linguistic border region between Germany and the Netherlands (dialectology, language contact, Frisian). Those considering academic careers in linguistics or literature with a Dutch focus. Students who want to start Dutch from zero in a university setting.
Limitations
This is a full degree program requiring formal university admission and a multi-year commitment. Programs are in-person in Oldenburg. Instruction is primarily in German. The curriculum is academic rather than practical — not for learners who want quick conversational Dutch. Course offerings and specializations depend on current faculty research interests.
