University of Pennsylvania — Dutch: Elementary, Reading Knowledge, and Exchange

The University of Pennsylvania offers Dutch language instruction through its Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. The program covers Elementary Dutch I and II, Dutch for Reading Knowledge, and maintains a notable exchange link with KU Leuven through the Breughel Professorship.

What UPenn Dutch Offers

Elementary Dutch I and II provide a two-semester introduction to the language, covering fundamentals of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and basic conversation. Students who complete both semesters achieve roughly A1/A2 proficiency with a foundation for further study.

Dutch for Reading Knowledge is a specialized course for graduate students and researchers who need to read Dutch academic texts, historical documents, or primary sources. This course focuses on grammar recognition, vocabulary building for academic contexts, and translation strategies — practical for historians, art historians, and scholars of early modern Europe.

The Penn / KU Leuven Exchange and the Breughel Professorship link create opportunities for Penn students to study in Leuven and for visiting Belgian scholars to teach at Penn. These connections add a strong Flemish dimension to the program.

Good Fit For

UPenn students who want Dutch as part of their language portfolio. Graduate students in history, art history, or European studies who need Dutch reading knowledge. Students interested in the Penn-Leuven exchange connection. Learners who want Dutch within an Ivy League academic context.

Limitations

The program serves primarily enrolled UPenn students. Courses are in-person in Philadelphia. The language offering is limited to elementary level plus reading knowledge — there is no intermediate or advanced Dutch conversation track. Course availability depends on enrollment and departmental resources. Not suitable for learners seeking conversational fluency or integration-focused Dutch.
