University of Queensland: Dutch Courses at the Institute of Modern Languages
The University of Queensland's Institute of Modern Languages (IML) in Brisbane offers Dutch language courses that are open to the general public. The programme includes Level 1A (complete beginner) and a "Survival Dutch" short course for travellers and new arrivals. Courses are available both on campus and live via Zoom. Information and enrolment are at https://iml.uq.edu.au.
Course Content
Dutch Level 1A covers the essentials: greetings, numbers, telling time, ordering food and drinks, asking for directions, and basic sentence patterns. The Survival Dutch course is even more practical — it focuses on the phrases and cultural knowledge you need for a short trip or the first weeks of living in the Netherlands or Flanders.
Both courses are interactive and conversation-driven. Grammar is introduced in context rather than as abstract rules. Teachers are native or near-native speakers, and class sizes are kept small (usually 8 to 16 students) to maximize speaking time.
The IML Model
UQ's IML is a community-focused language institute within a major research university. This means you get academically designed syllabi and qualified instructors, but in a continuing-education format that is more relaxed than a degree course. No prior university enrolment is required. The pricing is reasonable by Australian standards — more affordable than private tutoring but more expensive than a free app.
Good Fit For
Learners in Brisbane (or anywhere in Australia, via Zoom) who want a structured, teacher-led introduction to Dutch. The Survival Dutch course is useful for people with an upcoming trip who need practical phrases fast. The university affiliation provides quality assurance that a random online tutor may lack.
Limitations
Only beginner levels are available — there is no A2 or B1 follow-up within UQ. Course frequency is limited; Dutch may only run once or twice per year depending on demand. If minimum enrolment is not met, courses can be cancelled. Time zone differences make the live Zoom sessions impractical for learners in Europe or the Americas. No exam preparation or formal certification.
