University of Toronto — Dutch Language Training: Four-Level Online Series
The University of Toronto's School of Continuing Studies offers a structured four-level Dutch language training series delivered entirely online. Designed to take learners from absolute beginner to A2 proficiency, the program is geared toward adults who want a systematic introduction to Dutch with a university-level approach.
What U of T Dutch Language Training Offers
The series consists of four levels (Dutch Language Training I through IV), each building on the previous one. Level I starts from zero, introducing the alphabet, basic greetings, and present tense. By Level IV, learners handle past and future tenses, more complex sentence structures, and everyday conversations about work, travel, and personal interests.
Courses are delivered online with a mix of live instructor-led sessions and self-paced materials. Each level runs for a set number of weeks with weekly class meetings, making it manageable alongside work or other commitments. The curriculum follows the CEFR framework with clear learning objectives for each level.
The program is designed to achieve A2 proficiency upon completion of all four levels — sufficient for basic everyday interactions, shopping, simple workplace communication, and travel in Dutch-speaking regions.
Good Fit For
Adult learners in Canada or globally who want a structured, university-backed online Dutch program. Absolute beginners who prefer a systematic progression with levels and certificates. Professionals who can commit to weekly evening classes. Learners who want the credibility of a University of Toronto credential.
Limitations
The program maxes out at A2, so learners aiming for B1 or higher will need additional study after completing the series. Courses follow a fixed schedule with specific intake periods. The pace is steady but not intensive — not the right fit for someone who needs rapid progress. Canadian tuition rates apply, which may be higher than alternatives for international learners.
