About Melvin v.

Hi, I'm Melvin from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 I help students build a strong and practical foundation in Dutch — from complete beginners to professionals who want to speak and write with more confidence. My story My teaching journey started when I helped my wife prepare for her MVV exam. I noticed that many lessons moved too quickly, without truly building a solid foundation first. That experience inspired me to develop a more structured and practical approach — a method that my wife and I now use together as she continues her own Dutch lessons in the A2 program. What I offer 🏗️ A1 — Dutch Foundation & MVV Prep A structured 40-hour program covering the essentials: sentence structure, verb conjugation, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Suitable for MVV preparation or anyone starting from scratch. 📈 A2 — Inburgering & Everyday Dutch The natural next step after A1 and part of the civic integration exam. Open to anyone living in the Netherlands who wants to become more confident in daily Dutch — whether for the exam or simply for life here. 🎯 B1+ — Grammar for Speaking & Writing For students who already speak Dutch but want to sharpen their accuracy. We identify your specific gaps — verb tenses, sentence structure, conjunctions like omdat — and work on those directly. No fixed program: every session is tailored to where you need it most. Flexible by design You can start at any level. Whether you want a complete program, a single topic, or just exam preparation — we begin where you are and work toward your goals. If I notice a gap along the way, I'll bring it up and we address it together. My approach My background as an Oracle DBA taught me to think in structures and solve problems efficiently. I apply that same mindset to language teaching: every lesson has a clear focus, a logical build-up, and plenty of active practice. My philosophy: less explaining, more doing. You will speak, practice, and produce Dutch from the very first lesson. What you can expect ✅ Speaking practice in every lesson ✅ Real-life conversations and role-plays ✅ Grammar explained simply and practically ✅ Structured homework and writing practice ✅ Honest feedback and progress tracking What I expect from you The students who progress fastest are the ones who show up consistently and practice between lessons. If you bring the commitment, I'll bring the structure. Ready to start? Book a trial lesson and let's find out where you are and where you want to go. 🚀 Although I come from a non-traditional teaching background, I've built intensive hands-on experience guiding students through Dutch language learning — from complete beginners working toward their MVV exam to A2 students preparing for the inburgeringsexamen. I developed two structured programs — A1 and A2 — each focused on building a strong foundation through active learning, practical application, and clear step-by-step progression. The A2 program is something my wife and I work on together, combining our experiences as both teacher and learner. As a language learner myself — currently learning Indonesian — I understand firsthand what it feels like to build a new language from scratch. That perspective directly shapes how I teach: I know what helps, what frustrates, and what builds real confidence. My background as an Oracle DBA (10+ years) trained me to break down complexity into clear, logical steps — a skill that translates directly into how I structure lessons and explain grammar. Learning a new language takes time and effort — and Dutch is no exception. I know that from my own experience as a language learner. That's exactly why my lessons are built around one principle: you need to use the language to learn it. You won't sit and listen while I explain. From lesson one, you'll speak, practice, and apply what you've learned in real situations. Every lesson has a clear structure, a practical focus, and room for the repetition your brain needs to make things stick. Whether you're b

Melvin has a very organised way of teaching, and his real life approach to learning Dutch helps me apply what I learned to daily life outside the lesson. I will heavily recommend learning Dutch with Melvin.

I really enjoyed practicing A1-speaking with Melvin and would definitely recommend him! BTW, this definitely won’t be my last lesson with Melvin :) I’ll be coming back to him for my A2 journey! One thing I really appreciate is that he doesn’t waste lesson time. We do chat a little sometimes, but he always knows when to bring us back to the lesson and keep me practicing. I’ve had lessons before where casual conversation easily takes up too much time, so I really value this about his teaching style. I even had a lesson with Melvin the day before my exam, and I’m so glad I did! It was honestly one of the best decisions I made. He gave me a great speaking tip that was super helpful for the exam. He’s also very good at noticing the gaps in my knowledge during class. After each lesson, he shares materials he made himself based on what I need to work on, which makes the lessons feel very personalized.

Lessons with Melvin fly by. His lessons are very well structured, with a plan and a goal. He has his own supporting material which helps a lot and gives me a sense of professionalism. Very important for me: his video and sound are always spot on and his internet never fails. On the personal side, he’s kind, easygoing and engaging :) I tried 4 different tutors before I chose Melvin, and I’m very happy that I did! Totally recommended!
