If you are a nurse heading to Flanders, the default route is the Flemish one: start with an intake at a Flemish integration agency, work toward NT2 B1, and confirm the exact language level your recognition body or employer expects. Dutch BIG-oriented courses are built for the Netherlands and do not map cleanly onto Flemish nurse recognition, so treat them as a fallback rather than the plan.

Why the Flemish route comes first

Nursing recognition in Flanders is a Flemish matter. BIG is a Netherlands register, and a course sold as "BIG-oriented" is preparing you for a Dutch system you will not be entering. That does not make such courses bad. It makes them the wrong target if your job and registration are in Flanders.

What you actually need is Dutch at the level your recognition process and employer require, plus, if you are a newcomer subject to civic integration, the inburgering trajectory. Under the 2021 Civic Integration Act (obligation from 1 January 2022), the standard route is B1, with exams in reading, listening, writing and speaking plus KNM. A municipality can allow A2 after substantial effort; older obligations used A2. For naturalisation the language requirement is A2 in 2026, with a move to B1 planned but no confirmed start date. Check the official source for how any of this applies to you.

The Flemish intake options

Agentschap Integratie en Inburgering is the broadest starting point. It is the Flemish agency for integration and civic integration, operating across Flanders and Brussels, and it routes adults to NT2 courses and inburgering trajectories. For a nurse settling anywhere in Flanders outside Antwerp or Brussels, this is usually the first call. It suits people who want one agency to point them at a course and a trajectory; it does not suit someone who already has a confirmed course place and only needs an exam.

Atlas Antwerpen (Agentschap) does the same job for Antwerp specifically, running its own integration routes independent of the Flemish Agency. If you are moving to Antwerp, this is the local door and often the quicker one. It is not useful if you are settling in Ghent or Leuven.

Huis van het Nederlands Brussel is the Brussels equivalent: official Flemish-backed intake and routing that matches adults to a suitable CVO or integration course. It covers levels up to C1, which matters if you later need more than B1. Choose it if Brussels is your destination; skip it otherwise.

Where exams fit

Once you are learning, you may need a certificate rather than a course. VDAB Taaltest Nederlands is the Flemish public employment service's standardised placement and proficiency test for job seekers and workers, covering A1 to B2. For a nurse job-hunting in Flanders it is a practical way to evidence your level to an employer. It is a test, not teaching, so it does not replace a course.

If your plans include further study, ITNA is the interuniversity Dutch test used for Flemish university admission and exemptions at B2 and C1. CNaVT PTHO is the B2 profile certificate for admission to Flemish higher education, and CNaVT PTHS is the B1 certificate for Flemish higher secondary pathways. These are relevant if a nursing specialisation or further qualification requires them, not as a first step.

What to ignore, and what to check

University of Michigan - Dutch Language is a genuine Dutch programme with Flemish culture content, but it is a US campus minor in Ann Arbor. It is not a route into Flemish nursing and is only relevant if you are already studying there.

Price matters here, and we do not publish it. Course fees, exam fees and any reduced rates vary by provider and by your situation, so ask the provider directly before committing.

Two practical checks before you pay for anything: confirm the language level your Flemish recognition process requires, and confirm whether your municipality expects inburgering from you. Both answers change which course is right. If you want to compare tutors for conversation practice alongside a course, see our tutor listings; for the full map, use the directory or the path finder. Background on civic integration is at /inburgering and exam preparation at /nt2-prep.

How we know this: the options come from The Dutch Directory listings checked on 2026-11-02, and fit scores are editorial, not user ratings.
