If you have just arrived in Mechelen and want to learn Dutch, start with Crescendo CVO Mechelen. It is the local NT2 school on our list, covering A1 to C1 with intake counselling and the NT2-test A2 included. Everything else below is either an exam, a routing service or a general reference, so read the notes before you assume it offers classes in Mechelen.

The local class option

Crescendo CVO Mechelen is the one provider here that is actually based in Mechelen and built around NT2 teaching. Levels run from A1 to C1, so it can take you from first words to a level that supports work or study. The intake counselling matters for newcomers: it is where you find out which level fits and what the course involves. This suits people who want a structured class with a local address and a clear progression. It does not suit someone who only needs a certificate exam or who wants a one-to-one tutor. Prices and schedules are not published in our listings, so check with the school directly.

Exams and certification

CNaVT Exams are the Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal, official international Dutch certificates at A2 to C1, recognised worldwide, with exam sessions in May. They fit people who need a portable certificate for work, study or a move abroad. They are not a course and will not teach you the language, so they are a poor first stop if you have just arrived and cannot yet hold a conversation.

Selor taalexamen Nederlands covers Belgian federal public-service language exams at A2 to C1, with reading, writing, listening and speaking components. This is relevant if you are aiming at a federal public-service job. It is not useful for general learners or for private-sector roles that do not ask for it.

If your route runs through civic integration, the inburgeringsexamen Nederlands is the standard exam, and there is a separate A1 variant for specific newcomer groups on an A1 pathway. Under the 2021 Civic Integration Act, the standard route is B1 with exams in reading, listening, writing and speaking plus KNM, and a municipality can allow A2 after substantial effort. Older obligations used A2. Check the official source for your own case rather than relying on a general guide.

For higher-level study, the Staatsexamen NT2 matters: Programma I is B1 for work and vocational study, Programma II is B2 for higher education and many professional roles. Our NT2 prep section covers preparation.

Routing and reference bodies

Huis van het Nederlands Brussel is the official Flemish-backed intake and routing service for adults learning Dutch in Brussels. It matches learners to a suitable CVO or integration course. It is genuinely useful if you live or work in Brussels, but it is not a Mechelen service, so do not expect it to place you in a Mechelen class.

Taalunie is the international regulatory body for Dutch, founded in 1980 by the Netherlands and Belgium, with Suriname as associate. It sets spelling and grammar policy. It is a reference source, not a school, and will not teach you to speak.

Instituut voor de Nederlandse Taal is a Leiden-based scientific institute for lexicography, corpora and language advice. Useful when you want to look up usage or check a word. Not a course.

Practical notes for Mechelen

Mechelen sits in Antwerp province, and Crescendo is described in our listings as an NT2 provider for Mechelen and the province, which is why it is the natural first call. Ask about intake dates, level testing and cost when you contact them.

For naturalisation, the language requirement is A2 in 2026. A move to B1 is planned but has no confirmed start date, so do not build a plan around a change that has not been dated. Check the official source.

If you want conversation practice outside a classroom, our directory lists tutors, and Dutch tutors explains how to choose one. A tutor marked Verified Pro on this site has 3,000 or more lessons and a 4.9 or higher rating on their platform, which is a useful filter but not a guarantee of fit. The path finder can help you decide between a class, a tutor and an exam. For other cities, see cities, and for the integration route in general, inburgering.

How we know this: the options come from The Dutch Directory listings checked on 2026-10-20, and fit scores are editorial, not user ratings.
