If you are aiming at elderly care or home care, the courses that actually help are the ones that teach care vocabulary and the register you use with older clients: informal address, careful wording, and terms for daily tasks like washing, dressing, medication and transfers. General NT2 courses give you the base but rarely the care vocabulary. Below are the options in our listings that come closest, with who each one suits.

Start with the register, not just the level

Elderly care Dutch is not the same as office Dutch or exam Dutch. You will talk to people who may be hard of hearing, confused, or in pain, and you will write short reports that a colleague or family member reads. That means short sentences, plain words, and a warm but not childish tone. A course that only drills grammar will leave you guessing at the words for a hoist, a pressure sore, or a client who is "in de war". Look for courses that name care settings explicitly.

Courses and exams that cover care Dutch

Medical Dutch - Maastricht University Academy is an online course for healthcare professionals with foreign diplomas, at B2 and C1, and it prepares for the BIG-register language requirement. It fits people already in a clinical role or heading into one. It is less useful if you are at A2 or B1 and still building basic fluency, because the entry level assumes you can already follow a professional conversation.

Babel Medical Dutch B2+ in Utrecht is a dedicated medical Dutch course at B2+ that includes BIG-register exam preparation. It suits learners who want a taught course with a school behind it and who can study in or near Utrecht or online. If you only need everyday Dutch for a home-care job and no registration, this is more than you need and you should check the provider on price and entry requirements.

On the exam side, CNaVT PTGE (Professionele Taalvaardigheid Gezondheidszorg-en Zorg) is the Belgian CNaVT certificate for Dutch proficiency in healthcare and care-sector professions, at B2. It is the closest thing in our listings to a care-specific qualification for the care sector rather than for doctors. It fits people working or planning to work in Flanders, and it is not the right route if your job is in the Netherlands and requires BIG registration.

CNaVT PMT is the medical profile certificate, at B2 and C1, testing the Dutch needed for medicine and healthcare studies in Flanders. It is aimed at study admission and medical practice, so it is heavier than most elderly care and home-care jobs require. Useful if you plan to study further in healthcare; overkill if you just need to talk to clients and write reports.

For the Dutch route, BIG-register Language Test is the mandatory test for foreign-trained healthcare professionals seeking BIG registration, at B2 or B2+ depending on profession. BIG-register taaleis Nederlands is the requirement and testing pathway itself, at B2. Both matter only if your role is one that requires BIG registration. Many elderly care and home-care jobs do not, so check the official source before you build a study plan around them.

What general options can and cannot do

Katja Verbruggen NT2 is a social account rather than a course: an experienced NT2 teacher posting exam tips and professional vocabulary for healthcare and office Dutch. It is a good free supplement between lessons, and it is honest about being a supplement. It will not replace a structured course or an exam.

If you are still below B1, the general path matters first. Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I is B1 and is aimed at work and vocational study; Programma II is B2. Inburgering under the 2021 Civic Integration Act uses a standard route at B1, with a municipality able to allow A2 after substantial effort. Naturalisation requires A2 in 2026, with a move to B1 planned but no confirmed start date. None of these teach care vocabulary, so treat them as the floor, not the finish. See /inburgering and /nt2-prep for the general routes, and /tools/path-finder if you are unsure where you sit.

A realistic plan

Get to B1 first if you are not there. Then add a care-specific course or exam profile, choosing by country and role: CNaVT PTGE for care-sector work in Flanders, the BIG-register route only if your Dutch role requires registration, and a medical Dutch course if you want taught structure. Use free vocabulary posts to fill gaps. For tutors who can drill speaking with you, see /dutch-tutors; Verified Pro on this site means a tutor with 3,000+ lessons and a 4.9+ rating on their platform. Prices and schedules are not listed here, so check each provider directly.

How we know this: the options come from The Dutch Directory listings checked on 2026-10-22, and fit scores are editorial, not user ratings.
