If you work in Amsterdam hospitality and deal with customers, you do not need fluent Dutch to start. You need enough to greet, take an order, answer simple questions and handle a complaint without switching to English every time. The practical route is a course focused on speaking, ideally A1 to A2 first, then B1 if you want to move up.
What hospitality workers actually need
Customer-facing roles ask for spoken Dutch more than written Dutch. Menus, reservations and small talk are the daily reality. A general course will get you there, but a conversation-heavy one gets you there faster. If you are also dealing with inburgering or a residence permit, the rules are different and you should check the official source. In short: the 2021 Civic Integration Act standard route is B1, with reading, listening, writing, speaking and KNM exams. Naturalisation requires A2 in 2026, with a move to B1 planned but no confirmed start date.
Amsterdam options that fit shift work
The Square Mile Amsterdam runs business and conversational Dutch for professionals, with fast-track corporate programs and intensives. It suits hospitality workers who want a structured, work-focused course and can commit to a block of lessons. It is less suited to someone who needs to dip in and out around unpredictable shifts.
Sagènn Language Institute is small-scale and personal, with a focus on speaking confidence for expats in Amsterdam. That makes it a good match if you freeze when a customer speaks Dutch and want low-pressure practice. It is not the best fit if you want a large group or a purely exam-driven course.
Berlitz Amsterdam uses the Berlitz Method, with immersive Dutch lessons in business and private formats, in person and online. It fits workers who want an immersive approach and can pay for private or small-group attention. It may be more than you need if you just want basic service Dutch on a budget.
TopTaal NT2 Expert BV is a practical NT2 and inburgering specialist, Blik op Werk certified, with locations across multiple cities. It suits hospitality workers who also need to satisfy inburgering or NT2 requirements. It is less suited if you only want conversational Dutch with no exam component.
ROC van Amsterdam (Educatie & Inburgering) is the largest ROC in the Netherlands, offering inburgering, NT2 and MBO+Taal programs that combine vocational training with Dutch from A2 upward. It fits workers who want a formal route and possibly a vocational qualification alongside language. It is not the fastest option if you need speaking confidence next month.
Rotterdam options worth the train
If you live or work near Rotterdam, or your employer has sites there, two more options are relevant.
Hamrah Taalschool Rotterdam is a strong all-rounder with in-company business Dutch options and NT2 preparation. It fits hospitality workers whose employer will arrange in-company training, or who want NT2 preparation alongside work. It is less convenient if you are Amsterdam-based and cannot travel.
Volksuniversiteit Rotterdam offers accessible step-by-step Dutch courses, 16-week terms with an end test, plus refresher and speaking skills tracks, with September and February starts. It suits workers who want a steady, low-cost group course and can commit to a fixed term. It is not ideal if your rota changes weekly.
Private tutors for irregular hours
If your shifts make group courses impossible, a private tutor is often the only workable route. On our tutor listings, verified pros include Elisa, Marco van Arnhem and Renate A.. Verified Pro on this site means 3,000+ lessons and a 4.9+ rating on their platform. A tutor can drill the exact phrases you use at work: reservations, allergies, complaints, closing time. Check availability and price directly with each tutor.

Choosing without wasting money
Match the course to your actual goal. If you want to chat with customers, prioritise speaking-heavy courses and tutors. If you need inburgering or NT2, prioritise providers with that specialism. If you are unsure where you stand, our path finder can help you pick a starting level, and the directory lets you filter by city and format. For exam-specific routes, see inburgering and NT2 prep. If you might move or work across cities, check city guides.
Prices, schedules and start dates change. We do not list them because we cannot verify them for you. Ask each provider directly before you commit.
How we know this: options come from The Dutch Directory listings checked on 2026-10-09, and fit scores are editorial, not user ratings.
