For most working parents, the practical answer is a mix: short daily self-study for speaking reps, plus one source of live feedback each week, either a flexible group course or a tutor. Self-study alone rarely fixes pronunciation and fluency, and a heavy course load is hard to sustain around work and childcare. Choose based on how much live speaking you can actually fit in.
Start with the exam rules, not the method
Before you pick a method, confirm what you are preparing for. Under the 2021 Civic Integration Act (obligation from 1 January 2022) the standard route is B1, with reading, listening, writing and speaking exams plus KNM; a municipality can allow A2 after substantial effort. Older obligations used A2. If naturalisation is your goal, the language requirement is A2 in 2026, with a move to B1 planned but no confirmed start date. Check the official source for your own file.
The official exam itself is run by Inburgeringsexamen (DUO), and the inburgeren.nl portal is where you find test info, booking and study materials. Neither teaches you to speak, but both tell you exactly what the speaking part asks. Parents often skip this step and waste weeks on the wrong level.
Self-study: good for reps, weak on feedback
Self-study fits parents with fragmented time: ten minutes on the train, twenty after bedtime. StroopTaal is an AI-powered app with real-life scenarios and is strong for inburgering and NT2 prep. It suits parents who can be consistent in short bursts. It does not suit people who need a person to correct their pronunciation, and it will not replicate exam pressure.
Use self-study as the base layer, not the whole plan. Record yourself speaking, compare against model answers, and bring your questions to a live session.
Group courses: structure, but a fixed timetable
A group course gives you a weekly rhythm and other learners to speak with. TopTaal NT2 Expert BV is a practical NT2 and inburgering specialist, Blik op Werk certified, with locations in Amsterdam and other cities, online and in person. It fits parents who can commit to a set schedule and want a recognised provider. It does not fit parents on rotating shifts who cannot guarantee attendance.
Hamrah Taalschool Rotterdam is a strong all-rounder with NT2 preparation and in-company options, useful if your employer might support you. It suits Rotterdam-based parents and those who want business Dutch alongside exam prep. It is less convenient if you are not near Rotterdam, though online options exist.
If you are in Flanders or Brussels, Agentschap Integratie en Inburgering routes adults to NT2 courses and inburgering trajectories across many locations. It fits Flemish residents starting from A0. It is not the route for someone already in the Dutch national system.
Before paying any school, check it is Blik op Werk certified; all government-funded schools must be.
Tutoring: the flexible option for irregular weeks
One-to-one tutoring is the best fit when your weeks vary. You book around shifts and childcare and get direct feedback on speaking. Verified Pro tutors on this site have 3,000+ lessons and a 4.9+ rating on their platform. Examples include Nina Anna-Rosa, Lidwine G. and Johannes Simons. See more on /dutch-tutors.
Tutoring fits parents who need flexibility and focused speaking practice. It does not fit tight budgets, since hourly costs add up; check each tutor for current rates. It also requires you to bring structure, because no one else sets your pace.

A realistic weekly plan for a parent
Three short self-study sessions of 15 minutes, one live session with a tutor or group class, and one mock speaking test recorded on your phone. That is enough to keep momentum without burning out. If your municipality funds a course, use DUO - Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs to check loans and registration, and ask your municipality what it allows.
For level questions, see /inburgering and /nt2-prep. If you are unsure where to start, the /tools/path-finder can narrow the choice, and /cities helps if you prefer in-person classes nearby.
How we know this: the options come from The Dutch Directory listings checked on 2026-10-30, and fit scores are editorial, not user ratings.
