Executive verdict

The KNM exam tests practical knowledge of how the Netherlands works: employment, housing, healthcare, education, public institutions, history and democratic rights. DUO administers it on a computer, with an examination time of 45 minutes [1]. The official syllabus contains eight themes and specifies questions constructed at Dutch language level A2 [2].

The change learners must account for took effect on 1 July 2025. The government emphasised knowledge of the Holocaust and women's self-determination [3]. Cito, which developed the revised exams, also describes a shift towards directly testing knowledge, using photographs instead of introductory films [4]. Preparation based entirely on older videos or remembered social etiquette questions therefore risks missing both content and presentation.

Our verdict is to use the statutory syllabus as a coverage checklist, DUO's practice exams for familiarisation, and an explicitly updated learning resource where explanations are needed [2][5]. Learn which organisation handles a problem and why an answer is correct.

The listed KNM examination fee is EUR 50 [6], and DUO's general results window for knowledge exams is eight weeks [7]. We could not verify an official raw passing threshold or independently inspect every item in the interactive practice tests. A confident promise about the exact number of mistakes allowed would exceed the evidence.

What is the KNM exam, and who needs it?

KNM means Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij (Knowledge of Dutch Society). It is a knowledge component of inburgering (civic integration), alongside separate language examinations and other obligations determined by the applicable integration rules [1].

The distinction matters because a learner can speak Dutch reasonably well while knowing little about the Dutch school system, or understand that system while struggling with Dutch questions. Preparation needs to address whichever gap exists.

Is KNM A2 or B1?

The statutory specification says KNM questions are constructed at A2 level [2]. That describes their linguistic design. It does not mean that KNM is a grammar examination, nor that a learner following a higher language route should search for a completely different society syllabus.

DUO distinguishes the B1 route, the onderwijsroute (education route), and the zelfredzaamheidsroute (self-reliance route). The education route includes KNM alongside language examinations. The self-reliance route normally ends with a municipal interview and certificate, rather than requiring the same examination package. Your persoonlijk plan inburgering en participatie, or PIP (personal integration and participation plan), and Mijn Inburgering (My Integration portal) identify your requirements [8].

This suggests a simple administrative check before studying: establish whether you need a KNM examination result. A reference to KNM in a course description does not establish that everyone attending the course must sit the exam.

KNM and KNS are different examinations

Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving, or KNS (Knowledge of Dutch Society), belongs to the basic integration examination abroad. Naar Nederland says the actual KNS test contains 30 questions and lasts 30 minutes. It also says all its KNS questions and answers appear in the preparation photo book [9].

That published question bank is a likely source of confusion behind searches for a KNM questions-and-answers PDF. A KNS download can be legitimate and official while preparing someone for a different examination.

Use our inburgering guide to place KNM within the broader process. For language examination preparation, the NT2 preparation guide addresses a separate study need.

What Dutch society knowledge is tested in KNM?

The official syllabus covers eight themes, unchanged in their overall classification by the revision [2]. Its scope combines navigating everyday services with understanding rights, responsibilities and public institutions.

The table follows the statutory headings. Examples describe published coverage, not a prediction of which questions will appear.

Official theme, with English meaning Examples of knowledge specified
Werk en inkomen (work and income) Finding vacancies, employment contracts, benefits, trade unions and workplace discrimination [2].
Omgangsvormen, waarden en normen (social conventions, values and norms) Appointments, family occasions, different household arrangements and variation between social groups [2].
Wonen (housing) Renting or buying, tenants' rights, utilities and local waste rules [2].
Gezondheid en gezondheidszorg (health and healthcare) GP services, referrals, urgent care, insurance and healthcare administration [2].
Geschiedenis en geografie (history and geography) Colonialism and slavery, the Holocaust, remembrance, provinces and public transport [2].
Instanties (institutions) Municipal services, taxes, benefits, police, legal assistance and digital government contact [2].
Staatsinrichting en rechtsstaat (government and the rule of law) Parliament, elections, the separation of powers, equality, freedoms and bodily integrity [2].
Onderwijs en opvoeding (education and parenting) School pathways, attendance obligations, parental involvement, support and education costs [2].

The useful study unit is a distinction

Knowing a translation is often insufficient. A learner should distinguish an employer from an employment agency, a municipality from a national agency, and an insurance premium from other healthcare costs.

Consider huisarts (general practitioner) and huisartsenpost (out-of-hours GP service). Government guidance distinguishes contacting the GP from contacting the out-of-hours service when care cannot wait outside normal hours. It also distinguishes GP care from hospital emergency care in its explanation of costs [10].

For study purposes, build small decision maps: what is the problem, who handles it, and what condition changes the answer? This is our preparation recommendation, rather than a published scoring rule.

Rights belong in the revision notes

The syllabus includes protection against workplace discrimination, tenants' rights, medical confidentiality and avenues for challenging poor treatment by public authorities [2]. A preparation summary organised only around what newcomers must do would leave out a substantial part of its meaning.

Similarly, geography extends beyond recognising a flag. The published objectives include locating provinces and understanding travel options. History connects the country's past to institutions, commemorations and the society learners encounter [2].

You do not need to turn preparation into an unrestricted history course. Use the stated objectives to decide what deserves attention. When a resource introduces a long list of facts, ask which objective those facts help you understand.

What changed in the KNM exam after July 2025?

The revision changed both the emphasis of the content and how questions are presented. The government announcement and Cito's explanation agree that the revised exams began on 1 July 2025 [3][4].

Our search of official notices found no subsequent comprehensive KNM syllabus replacement by this report's research date. DUO's news archive continues to identify the July revision as its KNM change notice [11]. That is a finding from the sources reviewed, rather than a guarantee that individual examination items never change.

More knowledge, less prescription about behaviour

Cito explains that the previous question style often asked what someone should best do or say. The revised approach tests the relevant knowledge more directly, without introductory films and with photographs [4].

The distinction should change how you revise. Instead of memorising a supposedly perfect response to every social encounter, identify the underlying institution, rule, right or convention.

It does not follow that practical situations or social customs have disappeared. The statutory document explicitly recognises variation in conventions between groups, regions and generations, while retaining knowledge of appointments, celebrations and family events [2].

This suggests a better way to interpret a cultural question: establish what the question says about the context. Avoid assuming that everyone in the Netherlands follows an identical private lifestyle.

The headline additions are not the whole revision

The government specifically highlighted understanding the Holocaust, the murder of Dutch Jews, the prohibition of antisemitism and discrimination, and women's right to determine their own lives [3].

Digital communication also matters. Cito identifies added objectives concerning digital information and contact with organisations [4]. Boom's explanation discusses safe digital access, privacy and the GP practice support worker as examples of practical coverage [12].

These are connected study areas. Digital administration can appear in a healthcare setting as well as under public institutions. Equality can appear in employment as well as constitutional rights. Our inference is that isolated lists of headline additions provide a weaker coverage check than studying across the complete theme structure.

For an older resource, assess both the explanation and the practice format. Correct information about a housing contract can remain useful, while an old mock exam may provide a misleading impression of how the revised examination looks.

What is the KNM exam format and passing score?

DUO confirms a computer examination lasting 45 minutes, with questions grouped around different themes [1]. Cito confirms the revised presentation uses photographs instead of introductory films [4].

The sources reviewed do not support publishing a universal number of mistakes that candidates may make. We could not verify an official raw passing threshold from the candidate information available to us.

What can you safely assume about questions?

Prepare to understand a situation or factual prompt and identify the answer that fits it. The official practice page provides KNM practice examinations, and Cito links directly to the revised examples [4][5].

However, we could not load the interactive assessment modules sufficiently to audit their full question counts, answer-option patterns or feedback. We therefore do not treat a number repeated on a commercial preparation page as a verified specification for every live examination.

This is an important distinction between three kinds of evidence: DUO's published administrative description, an observable practice test, and someone else's account of an examination sitting. They answer different questions.

Why a raw score claim needs stronger evidence

An online platform can choose its own mock-test length and passing threshold. Those design choices do not establish DUO's scoring rules. Likewise, a high score on a familiar mock test can reflect remembering the answer order.

Use practice scores diagnostically. Explain why the selected answer fits and why an alternative does not. If you cannot do that, return to the relevant concept before repeating the same test.

DUO also requires candidates to keep examination content confidential, including not photographing or copying questions [13]. A purported collection of live questions should therefore not be treated as an official public preparation bank. The published practice material and syllabus are the reliable starting points.

KNM exam sample questions and answers

The following questions are original teaching examples written for this report. They illustrate syllabus knowledge and are not copied DUO items, an official mock examination or a prediction of future questions.

The answer explanations matter more than the letters. The choices and wording are illustrative.

Healthcare: choosing the appropriate service

U hebt een gezondheidsklacht. Het is overdag en er is geen spoed. Wie belt u eerst? (You have a health complaint. It is daytime and there is no urgency. Whom do you call first?)

A. De huisarts (the GP). B. De politie (the police). C. De gemeente (the municipality).

Answer: A, the GP. Government guidance places the GP first for medical help that is not life-threatening and distinguishes the out-of-hours service for relevant problems outside office hours [10].

The learning point is to notice the conditions in the question. A change in urgency or time can change the appropriate service. Translating only the organisation names would miss that logic.

Healthcare costs: understanding the deductible

Betaalt u verplicht eigen risico voor een gewoon bezoek aan de huisarts? (Do you pay the compulsory deductible for an ordinary GP consultation?)

A. Ja, altijd (yes, always). B. Nee (no). C. Alleen als u werkt (only if you work).

Answer: B, no. Eigen risico means the insurance deductible. GP care does not use the compulsory deductible, although further investigation such as a blood test can do so [10].

The distinction is between the consultation and additional care. Avoid turning a correct rule about GP care into an overbroad claim that everything connected with a GP visit has identical cost treatment.

History: separating remembrance and liberation

Wat gebeurt er op 4 mei in Nederland? (What happens in the Netherlands on 4 May?)

A. Nationale Dodenherdenking (National Remembrance Day). B. Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day). C. Koningsdag (King's Day).

Answer: A, National Remembrance Day. The syllabus distinguishes remembrance on 4 May from Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day) on 5 May [2].

The study task is to connect the name to its purpose. Merely recognising familiar celebration vocabulary can make a plausible alternative look correct.

Equality: women's self-determination

Een volwassen vrouw wil werken. Heeft zij in Nederland het recht om zelf keuzes over haar leven te maken? (An adult woman wants to work. Does she have the right in the Netherlands to make her own life choices?)

A. Ja (yes). B. Alleen als haar familie toestemming geeft (only with her family's permission). C. Alleen als zij getrouwd is (only if she is married).

Answer: A, yes. The government identifies women's self-determination, including the ability to work and shape their own lives, as knowledge addressed by the revision [3].

This tests understanding of a right. It does not require the learner to guess what a particular family happens to prefer.

Education: understanding compulsory attendance

Wat betekent leerplicht? (What does compulsory schooling mean?)

A. Ouders mogen altijd zelf kiezen of hun kind naar school gaat (parents may always decide whether their child attends). B. Kinderen moeten volgens de wet naar school (children must attend under the law). C. Alleen volwassenen moeten naar school (only adults must attend).

Answer: B. Leerplicht means compulsory school attendance. Government guidance states that children between five and sixteen must attend school, subject to specified exceptions [14].

This example concerns the basic concept. A question about an older teenager may require additional knowledge about qualification obligations, which the syllabus also includes [2].

Digital government: protecting credentials

Mag u uw DigiD-inloggegevens aan iemand anders geven? (May you give your DigiD login details to someone else?)

A. Ja, aan iedereen die helpt (yes, to anyone helping). B. Ja, als het via e-mail gebeurt (yes, if sent by email). C. Nee (no).

Answer: C, no. DigiD's own security guidance says not to give login details to others [15].

Translate the important vocabulary, then connect it to the practical rule. Help with administration and surrendering control of personal login credentials are different things.

KNM exam practice, books and PDFs: what is worth using?

Begin with DUO's official practice material, then choose explanations that match the revised syllabus and your reading ability [2][5]. A purchase decision should turn on edition, accessibility, coverage and access conditions.

We compared the published descriptions and displayed prices of the resources below. We did not test complete paid courses or measure their effect on examination outcomes.

Compare the edition and the access period

These are product-page price snapshots at the research date, excluding any separately charged delivery. A book bundle and a standalone online licence are different purchases.

Resource Published fit and revision evidence Displayed price and access
DUO KNM practice examinations Official familiarisation material listed on DUO's practice page [5]. Free public practice links; no textbook included [5].
Welkom in Nederland (Welcome to the Netherlands), revised edition A2; publisher explicitly says adapted to the examination from 1 July 2025 [16]. EUR 45 for paperback with an online annual licence; online annual licence alone EUR 40.75 [16].
Kijk op Nederland (A Look at the Netherlands), revised edition Simplified language and extensive visual support; publisher confirms alignment with requirements after 1 July 2025 [17]. EUR 40 for paperback with an online annual licence; online annual licence alone EUR 36.50 [17].
TaalCompleet KNM Publisher identifies its revised issue as incorporating the updated statutory objectives; aimed at learners working towards A2 [18]. EUR 35.50 for workbook including three years of online access; price corroborated by Boom [18][19].
KNM-trainer, by VU NT2 Independent study with texts, listening sources, video and self-checking; publisher's revision article identifies the trainer as renewed [12][20]. EUR 18.95 for an annual licence; publisher says it is included for users of LINK [20].

A current resource can organise its teaching differently from the legal document. For example, Welkom in Nederland uses seven chapters even though the syllabus has eight themes [2][16]. Check whether content is covered, rather than treating a chapter count as proof that a topic is missing.

For learners who struggle with long Dutch explanations, the simplified language and pictures described for Kijk op Nederland may be a useful match [17]. That is an inference about accessibility, not evidence that its users pass more often.

For independent learners, check whether exercises have answers and whether online access is available. Welkom in Nederland lists answers and translated vocabulary support. TaalCompleet describes self-study suitability while excluding discussion assignments from that claim [16][18].

Published study load is not a passing-time estimate

KleurRijker estimates approximately 60 hours for the workbook and 40 hours for its online environment, while explicitly describing study load as a guideline [18]. Our calculation from those figures is approximately 100 hours for that complete course.

That does not establish that every candidate needs that amount of preparation. It includes a particular learning sequence and activities. Prior Dutch knowledge, literacy and familiarity with institutions can change what a learner needs to work on.

What about a free KNM PDF?

The official syllabus is publicly readable, with a PDF version linked from the legal publication [2]. It is a specification of learning objectives, rather than a complete beginner's textbook.

DUO's KNM practice material is presented as interactive examination links [5]. A search for a printable questions-and-answers file should not be interpreted as evidence that DUO publishes the full live KNM bank.

Publisher previews can help you inspect readability before buying. For additional explanations, DUO points learners towards supplementary material and public libraries [5]. Oefenen.nl lists society programmes about voting, health insurance, government communication and train travel [21]. Use such material to clarify a weak topic, then check its relevance against the syllabus.

We also found a price discrepancy within Boom's pages: its explanatory article displayed a promotional EUR 37.50 for Welkom in Nederland, while the dedicated product page displayed EUR 45 [12][16]. The table uses the product-page figure. We could not establish the promotion's validity period.

How do you register for KNM and get your results?

Register through Mijn Inburgering using DigiD, select the examination date and location, and follow DUO's payment instructions [22]. DUO's listed KNM fee is EUR 50, with conditional free attempts for eligible asylum status holders under the applicable rules [6].

Do not infer your entitlement from another candidate's experience. DUO's payment guidance distinguishes integration regimes and status categories. Check your own record and the conditions before budgeting for a first attempt or a resit [6].

Book with the administrative timetable in mind

DUO warns that it can take more than six weeks before a candidate can sit an examination [22]. That is a scheduling warning, not a claim that everyone waits the same length of time.

If you cannot log in, DUO provides a registration form as an alternative [22]. This answers a different search intent behind “KNM exam form PDF”: a registration form is not an examination paper.

Bring an accepted, valid identity document and follow the instructions in the appointment letter. DUO says an invalid or damaged identity document can prevent admission [13]. Checking the document before travelling is more useful than relying on another learner's recollection of entry checks.

KNM exam results and the language-exam backlog

DUO's general knowledge-examination guidance gives a results window of eight weeks, by letter and through Mijn Inburgering [7].

A separate notice dated 31 July 2026 extends the stated window for Speaking A2 and Writing A2 to a maximum of sixteen weeks [23]. That notice names those language examinations. It does not establish a sixteen-week KNM results window.

Keep the examination types separate when reading discussion threads about delays. A report about a speaking result does not tell you how quickly your society examination will be processed.

What this means for learners

Prepare around coverage, understanding and language. Use the official theme list to find omissions, explanations to repair them, and practice to check whether you can apply the knowledge.

Start with a diagnostic attempt. Use an unfamiliar official practice test if the platform loads for you [5]. Record whether an uncertain answer came from missing Dutch vocabulary, missing society knowledge, or misreading the conditions. Those problems need different responses.

Keep a distinction notebook. Write the Dutch term, an English gloss and a short explanation of its role. Pair easily confused concepts, such as an organisation and a different organisation with a similar purpose. Explain the difference aloud without looking at the answer.

Review rights alongside responsibilities. Include what help a person can request and what treatment they can challenge. This follows the breadth of the syllabus rather than reducing preparation to compliance or etiquette [2].

Audit older material before relying on it. Confirm that the edition explicitly addresses the revised objectives. Where a publisher provides that statement, it is stronger evidence of intended alignment than a seller adding the current year to a listing [16][17][18].

Use practice questions actively. Change a condition in an example and ask whether the answer changes. If an explanation collapses when the situation changes slightly, return to the concept. This is our suggested learning method, not a DUO-endorsed guarantee.

Make the final readiness check broad. Can you explain the major institutions and rights across the syllabus? Can you understand unfamiliar Dutch wording without translating every word? Can you distinguish a legal obligation from a social convention?

If language is the limiting factor, combine society study with a broader Dutch learning plan. Choose targeted help for the problem you have identified, rather than buying another question bank merely because its total looks larger.

What we could not verify

We could not verify an official raw KNM pass mark, a universal number of mistakes allowed, or a guaranteed question count for every live examination. The absence of those figures in the candidate information reviewed should not be converted into a numerical estimate.

DUO's interactive practice modules did not load sufficiently for an independent item-by-item audit. Several DUO information pages also returned retrieval errors; for those pages we used their indexed official text and cross-checked key information where possible against other official pages. We have not represented this as a completed examination simulation.

We found no controlled comparison showing which listed preparation product produces better KNM outcomes. Publisher descriptions establish intended content, access and pricing, rather than comparative effectiveness.

We could not establish a reliable personal preparation time, average results turnaround or validity period for the conflicting promotional book price. The practical study method and original sample questions are editorial teaching material, not official examination guidance.
