About Willem S.
You already speak English — but do you feel confident using it to negotiate, collaborate, or build real relationships in English? That's where I come in. I'm Willem, a Dutch-born English teacher based in Colombia, and I specialize in helping intermediate-level students move from competent to genuinely confident — especially in professional and intercultural settings. Having lived in China, Colombia, the Netherlands and having a partner from the US, I know firsthand that language is only half the picture. The other half is understanding the people on the other side of the table. My classes tend to be pragmatic and communication-oriented. I work best with students who: • Are ready to go beyond grammar and focus on building effective communication skills • Want to navigate the international business world, especially when working with Dutch companies or colleagues • Are exploring life abroad, immigration, or building cross-cultural relationships • Are genuinely curious about our world and want a teacher who is too If you're looking for a one-off lesson, if you're looking for intensive grammar , or if you are just starting off, I'm probably not your person. But if you want to grow steadily over time or seek to prepare yourself for a high-stakes meeting — let's talk. Fun fact about me: in my own time I've been working on exporting coffee to the Netherlands. Coffee is always a good excuse for a good conversation :). EDUCATION & TRAINING • B.Sc. Environmental Policy and Economics — Wageningen University (Netherlands) • 120-hour TEFL Certificate • Harvard Online: Entrepreneurship, CS50x (Computer Programming), Social Work TEACHING EXPERIENCE • English Instructor — Preply (online, international students) • 2 years as a business English Instructor — Beyond Business English, Colombia (international corporate clients) • Classroom Teacher — English, Economics & Mathematics (2 years) Learning English is both rewarding and challenging — and I know this from both sides of the classroom. As someone who grew up speaking Dutch and has since built a life across cultures through English, I bring empathy to every lesson. . I work hard to have classes that feel engaging and tailored to you — because language learning should feel natural and empowering, not like a chore. Sounds interesting? Willem is a pleasant person. I learn a lot from him and there is a good vibe during the lessons.
